As the byline to the blog denotes – colour, pattern, patina – I am pretty keen on all things with interesting surface design or colour (forget the patina bit, that’s more my love of vintage, we’ll come to that another time). When both colour and pattern come together and are truly nailed, my heart usually sings with joy. And, since Jordan from Two Lovely Gays installed a beautiful mural wall in an apartment in Brighton on the first series of The Great Interior Design challenge a few years back, I’ve had a bit of a thing for mural walls. There is now a pretty spectacular range of them on the market, and because they are designed for a statement wall or space, they tend to be writ larger than wallpaper, bolder and with more aesthetic punch. And one company on my radar that are ticking all of the boxes for this right now are Murals Wallpaper.

These days I get a lot of emails about new products each day, some catch my eye, some don’t, I can honestly say each mail shot I get from this company catches my attention and makes me wonder if this is the true mural of my hearts desire to invest in. So, as I’m a generous sort, I thought I’d share some of my favourites from them with you today in a rundown of the 10 of the best. The Green Marbleised one (above) is my hands down favourite in terms of actual possibility that I may use it, it’s high end design at a reasonably affordable price point and this pattern is just so dreamy, there’s a hint of Pantones Greenery about it too, ditto the main image of Denim Drift Grunge (above, main pic) which I also love. Maybe 2017 will in fact be the year of green and not blue. What I love about both of these green murals are the texture. They have a beautiful subtlety to their punch, they wouldn’t dictate what else you put in the room (a brass palm tree or pineapple statement would look very pretty and not at all jarring against either) but they are most definitely there, neither receding or dictating, just there.

Murals are such a great way of adding impact, and although they are pricier per metre, you get a fair amount more bang for your buck compared to traditional wallpaper when used sparingly. All of these examples shown come in at £25 per square meter and they are a great way of achieving a high end look without having to spend a fortune on other fittings or furnishings. I would be tempted to use them in a small space, say on the wall of a dressing area (if you’re lucky enough to have one, still wishing here) or behind a headboard, or maybe to provide some personality to a small or narrow strip of wall that would otherwise languish unadorned.

I’ve just changed my blog links to green in the last month so I am more than a little persuaded that Pantone’s slightly controversial colour choice for 2017 may be bang on. Even if all this silliness with colour forecasting is a whole load of bumf (Radiant Orchid never really came through, did it?) one thing is for sure, house plants and nature in the home are set to remain a staple in the interiors world for the foreseeable period to come. A lot of much more highly regarded people will tell you that this symbolises a need to reconnect with nature as life has speeded up or events on the political stage create feelings of fear and alienation. Well if this is the case, I can think of no better home statement than a whole forest on your wall! It’s almost like trompe l’oil in its illusory effect, but much cleverer and more sophisticated.

I love the brush stroke pattern of this print, it looks so fresh styled amongst the blush pink and plywood, it would be fabulous in a bathroom, what do you think?

If you’re looking for pop and punch, Mural Wallpapers do a fantastic range of patterns. I love this from their Memphis collection, it would look stunning either on a whole wall or perhaps boxed in with really thick neon or black washi tape as a border, what do you think?

Now this is another example of something marketed at kids deco that I could happily adult alongside. There’s a hint of 1950’s cafe about it to me, and a suggestion of terrazzo, I absolutely love it. I’m wondering if our super masculine home office, which is painted in the darkest of most masculine greys, could take a pop of the example with peach tones at the top.

If you are looking for Memphis still, then let me introduce you to this stunner, screaming 80’s power dressing for walls and unashamedly so, this is a mural for the brave, but boldness is beauty after all and if you have the right aesthetic and personality this would make a stunning statement.

And for the final hurrah, who likes this graffiti science blackboard? There’s so much interest in this design and if you want to cheat the creative look without the effort, you’d have to search far and wide to find a better example.
