The Best Statement Coffee & Side Tables

November 8, 2017

Outside of the other big ticket item in the living room - sofa's - there is one piece for me which always makes or breaks a living room design. And as I am in the midst of planning our living room revamp (not a total drawing board refresh more of a tweaking of style with a change up of elements) I've been looking at coffee and side table options. For my refresh I want to up the sophistication a notch and add in a few new timeless pieces that have real impact in the style stakes. They are crucial pieces as they have both a function and form that will impact massively on the statement of your room. Needing to be big enough to comfortably take magazines, drinks, flowers and trinkets, and reached easily from the furniture. But not so big that they dwarf other elements in the room. We recently had a family birthday celebration in the living room and concluded that our much loved pallet table (which is a fabulous size for small gatherings and everyday use) is completely unsuitable to larger gatherings. So I have been tentatively looking at what's on the market, and if I am going to trade in my coffee table (which is a big if right now) I know that I want a statement piece, one that doesn't fade into the background but sings its design and creaftmanship on first sight. I've included some very high end pieces for inspiration, and if you are lucky enough to have the budget they would serve any living room very well. First item is from a company who are new to me but who I spotted on the front cover of Elle Deviration last month. The sofa and chair co are all about high end luxury furniture that add wow to interiors. I love the material and solidity to this piece, in particular the bronzed stainless steel base, it would make a perfect statement showpiece. This design from MADE is almost like a piece of set design to me, the hint of the Memphis movement, Walala and playful use of colour and shape makes this a really fun statement which I would pair with simple furniture and dark blue walls. For the bohemian maximalist, this brass drum base with inlaid centre piece is perfect for creating relaxed glamour and would work really well within any eclecticist scheme. One of my very favourites, this piece from & Tradition is the height of elegance for me, it needs no fancy adornments, a coffee and a newspaper would feel so decadent on this glorious shape and surface multilayered table. I am very persuaded by this, from the brass legs elegantly kicked out to the absolutely gorgeous dark marble top, this piece is a statement of glamour with an urbane edge. Enormously versatile in looks it could match, who wouldn't want this statement piece from The Sofa & Chair Co?! It's safe to say that this Vitra table is a classic, it's been produced since the 1940's. I love the elagance of the glass balanced atop the clean lines of sculpted wooden legs. This is understatement that makes a statement, perhaps not especially toddler friendly, but if you're child free make hay whilst the sun shines! When you need the warmth of wood, but want the glamour of a Statement coffee table you'd be hard pressed to find a more glamorous wooden option. This is the Zabel from Swoon Editions, the gorgeous faceted wood pattern makes this practical piece a real joy to behold. Finally neither a coffee table or a side table but definitely a statement table. The Murray drink table is elegantly made to hold a drink singular, and if you're imagining abuthing other than a cocktail or highball glass we're on different pages. Such a sophisticated design and one which makes a great play of material, the brass perched so elegantly atop the grey marble, this is such a winner.
