You may remember that 18 months ago, whilst researching options for the new bathroom, I wrote a piece on all the encaustic patterned tiles I’d been crushing on. At that time it was a trend that was moving from high design and glossy magazines into the mainstream and there was a flood of new choices on the market. Well, as you can probably anticipate, as soon as people start coveting something, more accessible versions start being produced (and hooray for that).I had ordered a few computer printed tiles online at the time, which were much cheaper than those painted into the surface, but to be honest I had been pretty disappointed with the grainy results. But there are some pretty incredible vinyl options around right now, take the image above, hands up whose seen the high end version of this design in cutting edge commercial spaces like Aesop? Yes me too!

Fast forward 18 months from my original tile piece to this Spring and what a difference a year makes! Not only had I been offered some great Lino in a lovely patterned tile design that I really wanted (but sadly couldn’t find space for), but also a newly established company called Atrafloor started dropping into my inbox with weekly press releases that had me swooning and wishing each week that I had a space to put them (and before you look for the disclaimer, this is not a sponsored post) I have been really wowed by this company’s designs.

As I am a generous sort, I thought I’d share some of the designs that have really caught my eye for those of you looking for cheaper alternatives to statement flooring (im a little jealous of you to be honest!). A lot of the examples are Atrafloor simply because I love their clever attention to trends and design detail but I’ve tried to cover the gamut from High Street to little-known-about that have all caught my eye. Some of these designs are inspired by the look of encaustic tiles but they are not trying to fake the real deal, there are no fake grout lines, just fabulous statement-making lust-worthy floor options at accessible price points.

If I’m entirely honest with you, as much as I love my encaustic tiles upstairs (and they have definitely earnt their keep in the exposure stakes!) if these kinds of design had been on the market when I was sourcing the bathroom I suspect one of them would be on the floor right now.

Often times cheaper does mean compromise but I really don’t think it does here, just a purse friendly shortcut to the kind of design more salubrious homes often possess. It may not be authentically artisan, but it packs a hell of a lot of (wipeable-easily-managed) beautifully patterned design punch that is well above its weight in price. My personal favourites are both Atrafloor, I love Sable with its abstract monochrome marks and Direction with its crisp blue and white Memphis inspired design, which would you choose?

I’ve been lusting after these floors for a while now, I’m in Australia but fingers crossed there will be a supplier who ships internationally for our new coastal kitchen. This is a great blog- Thank You Ruthie!
There are some really beautiful ones aren’t there? I always think of Australia being at the front of new Interiors gems, so many things I see and love are Australian! Hope they come to you soon. Thank you for your lovely comment xx
The Atrafloor designs are lovely, but come in one very narrow width – 1.4m – which unless you have a very small bathroom means a join. My flooring chap tells me it can only be cold welded because of the type of vinyl and that this is not a good enough join for a bathroom. If only it came in the usual widths!
Oh dear, that’s useful to know, I hadn’t really thought of that so thanks for the info xx
Absolutely! We had a beautiful flooring from them in our old house, but had to have a join (it was fine though I must say)…now my husband really doesn’t want a join and so I can’t have the flooring I want ? Haven’t found anything to rival it I have to say!!!
Oh no!! The designs are so beautiful, especially for the price, good luck with finding something you love xx
