About Design_Soda_Ruthie

I write Design Soda, a design blog with a focus on interiors. My blog aims to be an unpretentious, stimulating, fun and naturally curious delve into inspirational design and Londoncentric culture. I describe my style as boho-eclectic and am open to most design which doesn’t look too serious or composed. As a design geek with a love of vintage and upcycling, I am passionate about my home and love blogging ideas and looks that I find inspirational. Since the time when my teenage bedroom was an Aladdins cave of upcycled furniture, Cecil Beaton photography and Situationist slogans I have been interested in the way the home environment can make you feel and inspire your inner life. As a new mummy, trying to negotiate my passions with my lovely new baby's schedule can be difficult, but in my spare time you will often find me snapping the things that catch my eye in my wonderful home city London. Or, reading, upcycling, spending longer on Pinterest than I should, baking and watching old movies. I have a lifelong passion for French New Wave cinema.

Now I don’t know about you, but I think a lot of us who have kids (and some kind of aesthetic taste!) really struggle with how to decorate their rooms. So much plastic, turtles, superheroes, firemen (or is this just my child?!). When we first moved here three years ago Ted was only just one, so he had no input whatsoever when I created his vintage inspired nursery. I was trying to get as much of the house done as possible so budgets were tight, I had sourced some cheap second hand furniture which I upcycled and painted, bought a few wooden toys and a vintage horse rocking chair. I put up a showstopper of a pastoral wallpaper from Farrow & Ball called Gable which had exactly the kind of interwar vibe I was looking for.

Scholten & Baijings Time For Tea Installation at Fortnum & Mason

Scholten & Baijings Time For Tea Installation at Fortnum & Mason

The first day of October is surely a sign that we have passed the seasonal shift and crept firmly into the autumn/winter territory with their attendant chills and festivities. The autumn equinox was ten days ago and I, for one, would quite like to spend the season tucked up here on this installation at Fortnum & Mason.  If you saw my piece from a few weeks ago, you will know that I love the tradition of afternoon tea. If you also read my blog regularly (thank you!) then you will know that I’m quite partial to Scandinavian design.Read More
