Slow Stills – Studies of Nature During Lockdown

October 18, 2020

Just a short Sunday afternoon post from me. I wanted to share some of the nature studies I’ve made since lockdown both on my dslr and iPhone (in portrait modes). Whether wild flowers I’ve seen out and about, or prized blooms from bouquets, I’ve really enjoyed catching these silhouettes of detail and texture in nature over the last few months.

I currently have a few dotted around my study, I find them calming, but they also provide interest. Having taken up drawing in lockdown, I’ve loved pausing on the details and taking these pictures for no real purpose other than the pleasure of doing it which has been restorative. I’m so used to running around from one job to the next that to stop and reflect on something for pleasures sake alone has been so nice.

I may make them into a series of cards for friends, but one of the things that has really struck me doing this is the singular beauty of each stem. As an interiors blogger I’m so used to shooting bouquets which add a layer to home scenes, but the beauty of a single stem in vignette is a bit of a revelation and I have started to dot spaces with far smaller arrangements in the smallest of glass vases. It’s easy to feel jaded in the current climate but one of the positives of this period has been to really pause and take in nature, how about you?
