At the start of the year, during the New Years sales, I decided to invest in some long term pieces for the home. I have been very minimal and restrained and have bought very little for the home over the last few years, but I decided to invest part of the payment from a big job back into the home. I wasn’t thinking of drastic changes like renovation, but small upscale decorative objects that would create impact whilst also promising to stick around as pieces I’d always love. I made three purchases, two had been on my wishlist for the last three years, and the last one was something I spotted during London Design Festival last September.

I thought I would share them in their new homes, in lieu of any decorating updates to share (there are some coming up!). The first thing I searched the sales for was the very sultry Lato side table by &Tradition and it has made me inordinately happy, I appreciate its simple beauty as I glance across from my sofa each evening since I acquired it. The base is made from marble in an alabaster shade, and when I say it’s weighty, it really is, in fact I find it cumbersome to move when hoovering! It’s powder coated steel table top is much less heavy, but still sturdy, and boy is this thoughtfully designed substantial piece made to last. &Tradition have long been one of my favourite Scandinavian design houses (a long term piece I’ve yearned for over the last five years is Fly chair), and I’m more than delighted with my new addition (though I have to zealously protect it from my son who seems to be under the misapprehension that it’s a chair!).

In our bedroom we have a really nice, and inexpensive extendable wall light from MADE on my side of the bed. And as I don’t go for symmetry there was a lamp on my husbands bedside. It was a lovely piece I was gifted by Swoon many years back, but it was really tricky to clean, and in a household cleaning related incident I busted its fluted glass holder last year. In an attempt to streamline our bed area I decided on a wall hung light and knew exactly which one I would choose. I love the Arum lighting range by Ferm Living, we have the black marble based lamp in our living room which I was gifted a few years back. I love the elegance of its lily like shade. To bring some variety to the house, I decided to purchase it in the cashmere colour way, a lovely liveable beige shade, and although I love the black also, the cashmere option really suits our Pigeon green wall behind the bed.

My final purchase was smaller scale than the first two, but still outside of my usual budget. I had come across Form & Refine in the Kings Cross district of London Design Festival last year and their textiles perfectly matched something I’d been looking for for a long time – a couple of heirloom cushions in neutral colour ways that felt both natural and luxe and could easily be interchanged between living room, bedroom and dining space (we have a rattan armchair in here which desperately needs large squish-able cushions for comfort). I chose the monochrome stripe and brown colour way, the brown is a very peachy brown to my eye and the perfect shade for both blending into the living room colour scheme and added something soft and pastel-like against our soft green wall in the bedroom. These cushion covers are enormous and so beautifully made, if I find myself with any future advances I can allocate to the home, I have my sights firmly set on Form & Refine’s blanket range which look equally beautiful.
