About Design_Soda_Ruthie

I write Design Soda, a design blog with a focus on interiors. My blog aims to be an unpretentious, stimulating, fun and naturally curious delve into inspirational design and Londoncentric culture. I describe my style as boho-eclectic and am open to most design which doesn’t look too serious or composed. As a design geek with a love of vintage and upcycling, I am passionate about my home and love blogging ideas and looks that I find inspirational. Since the time when my teenage bedroom was an Aladdins cave of upcycled furniture, Cecil Beaton photography and Situationist slogans I have been interested in the way the home environment can make you feel and inspire your inner life. As a new mummy, trying to negotiate my passions with my lovely new baby's schedule can be difficult, but in my spare time you will often find me snapping the things that catch my eye in my wonderful home city London. Or, reading, upcycling, spending longer on Pinterest than I should, baking and watching old movies. I have a lifelong passion for French New Wave cinema.

House Tour – Living Room

May 27, 2013

When we bought this flat over a year ago it was this room that sold it to us, it had wood-chip walls and ceiling (ok most of the flat had that) hideous blue carpet (ditto), plastic air vents, bright orange polyurethane doors, mahogany shelving and a particularly hideous mock Victorian fireplace. Past all the hellish design choices made by the previous owner (& the fact that he was either a dangerous D.I.Y enthusiast or the employer of the original cowboy builder) this room had the most potential.Read More

D.I.Y Colour Pop Chairs - Bright Plywood School Chairs
So, whilst planning our kitchen I have been looking for some new dining chairs. I love French Tolix cafe chairs but alas budget does not stretch that far. So I switched to looking at examples of the current zeitgeist – mid-century modern. A few places are selling neon bright plywood chairs – Habitat have some really nice ones called Hester at £95 and Bloomsbury&Co are selling similar Canteen chairs for £200 a pop.Read More

Window Licking At Liberty London…

January 27, 2013

Liberty Alphabet garland Vintage, bookshelf, shelfieHow many ways are there to fall in love at Liberty of London? Too many by far. When in Liberty I feel rather like I may enact the French term from which window shopping derives – window licking! Liberty is such a sensory experience that I find window licking the only appropriate term to describe the greed that fills my eyes. However, it is only January so I swore to myself I would only purchase items from the stationary department and low and behold these magnificent alphabet celebration discs. So in homage to Valentines day – voila.
