Last Monday I finally got the chance to have a nose around the Greek Street showhouse Houzz of 2018. This week long showcase of interiors trends, curated over five storeys of a Soho townhouse, by professionals at Houzz and design firm Run for The Hills, showcased the most searched trends and saved images on popular Interiors platform Houzz over the last year. It’s always a bit of a thrill as an interiors obsessive to go and see these kinds of showcase, firstly to see which of your own hunches are there, but also because unless you are currently having your house renovated on a great budget, one doesn’t often get to see residential schemes in an environment that you can touch, feel and interact with.

The trends highlighted by Houzz included 70’s Revival (velvets, rust, rattan), Eclectic Traveller (literally always a trend in the whole twenty years I’ve been conscious of them), Mixed Metallics (self explanatory), Green Tones (a move towards sage-ier shades), botanical (a trend that’s not going anywhere) and two that really resonate with me – Modern Rustic & Craft. I’ve been drawn to things in these categories for quite some time, spotting things that get my heart racing at design shows in a vein I would call Craft Luxe or in understated pieces with sharp lines that make a play of simplicity and natural materials embodied by modern rustic.

One of the things I really liked about the Houzz House was the mix of budgets, beautiful Bang Olufsen speakers that cost the earth and Hastens Beds (more of which later this week) alongside high street staples like Dulux, Hillary’s Blinds and Topps Tiles. The room I most loved was the children’s room (closely followed by the marble tied bathroom). I loved the soft tones, the natural materials, the nod to the modern rustic, and just the right amount of kitsch to provide a counterbalance to the serenity – I mean, have you seen that toadstool Chair? Come on, we all need something like that in our lives.

If you didn’t make it along, the whole collection is shoppable via Houzz’s website. Of the pieces I saw, the items that stood out most to me were the small artisan accessories where the curve of a piece of wood on a candle stick or the hue of a collection of artisan earthenware had me seriously crushing. I’ve included some of my favourites below. What are you coveting for your home this year?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it. But thanks to your post I can get a feel of what it is like in real life. I’m looking forward to a little bit of 70’s kitsch (and that toadstool, hehe).
