You may be forgiven for thinking that it’s Scandinavian Design Week on the blog this week! Although it is Formex this week and was both Ormnaris & Formland Design Shows last week, my Scandi bent is pure coincidence I promise! So, on Monday we had the Ferm Living preview, Wednesday saw faux plants at Ikea and today a gorgeous wingback chair which, though British in origin, is thoroughly Scandinavian in both instinct and charm. This is the Angel chair from Burton-On-Trent based company Sloane and Sons.

When Sloane & Sons got in touch to see if I wanted to style their newly launched Angel chair in my home I was delighted to accept and see how it looked in two of the rooms upstairs. It’s such a beautiful statement design that looked well made, and thanks to the lightly tilted back, I’d heard was incredibly comfortable. But which colour to choose? There are so many gorgeous hues on sale, and you know me, I’m often a magpie for colour, but actually this chair with its Scandinavian lines was calling from the neutral tones for me. I absolutely love it in the deepest darkest of greys, there’s something about a punch of nearly-black in homewares that’s a bit of a shortcut to style in my eyes. But in the end I plumped for one in a colour that I’m not sure I’ve ever imagined myself saying – Beige! I know! But beauty shouldn’t have to grab you by the eyes and hold on for dear life should it (?), and this chair has all the quiet beauty of an absolute classic.

Great design that is both well made and visually arresting usually comes with a fairly hefty price tag, I would expect to find an item like this for well over £500, maybe even nearer to £1K, but it retails for just £199 and comes in an array of beautiful colours. It’s made for relaxing and I see it as a chair for a reading nook so my first thought was to put it in the study. Now I have to tell you this before we get any further, this chair is COMFORTABLE! As in ‘not-wanting-to-ever-get-up-

The colour works so well in the study and really pops against the deep dark almost black Downpipe on the walls. I can quite imagine myself curling up in here on a winters evening, cocooned in the soft padding of the chair with a blanket around me, enjoying the quiet stillness of a child in bed and a cat at my feet. There is something very sophisticated about this British-made and designed item, it combines a light elegance in the lines of its silhouette with the firm solidity of a well made piece of furniture. It’s not only Scandinavia you can see in its design ethos, there’s a pronounced nod to the Mid-Century Modern too, so it fits in perfectly amongst my Modernist mid-century inspired study.

The second space I felt this chair could look particularly pretty was in was our relaxed Scandinavian style bedroom. I’ve positioned it in quite a stylised corner of the room, as it’s the first place my eyes fall when I wake up it’s a space that I (try to) keep tidy and also one that I’ve put some of my favourite Scandi items on. The Angel chair looks beautifully at home here, and where it had a cocooning allure in the study, it has a light simplicity amongst the surfaces and textures of this corner with the glass and marble, wood and ceramic elements. I’ve added in a Stockholm cushion design from the latest Ikea range, my Scandinavian monochrome throw and a monochrome textured floor mat to make a play of tonal simplicity where texture sings.

The Angel chair is a really versatile item and I could see it adding charm to many spaces, I chose the beige but I’d also really love to see how the dark grey could look in a similar Scandi scheme, or for those who walk on the wilder side, there’s a fabulous bright merlot shade. Which colour would you pick? Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got some important relaxing to do on a certain comfortable piece with classic lines… I’ll leave you with some styling suggestions below.
