About Design_Soda_Ruthie

I write Design Soda, a design blog with a focus on interiors. My blog aims to be an unpretentious, stimulating, fun and naturally curious delve into inspirational design and Londoncentric culture. I describe my style as boho-eclectic and am open to most design which doesn’t look too serious or composed. As a design geek with a love of vintage and upcycling, I am passionate about my home and love blogging ideas and looks that I find inspirational. Since the time when my teenage bedroom was an Aladdins cave of upcycled furniture, Cecil Beaton photography and Situationist slogans I have been interested in the way the home environment can make you feel and inspire your inner life. As a new mummy, trying to negotiate my passions with my lovely new baby's schedule can be difficult, but in my spare time you will often find me snapping the things that catch my eye in my wonderful home city London. Or, reading, upcycling, spending longer on Pinterest than I should, baking and watching old movies. I have a lifelong passion for French New Wave cinema.

Istanbul bloggers guide - architecture wallpaper city guide

So things have been quiet for a very long while whilst I’ve been growing a baby! 15 weeks in I am finally starting to feel more myself so I thought I’d share some snaps from our recent trip to Istanbul. It’s a place that’s been on our list for years and it is truly stunning and otherworldly. It fed my tile and fabric obsessions to beyond brimming and I have come home wide eyed from a smorgasbord of texture and colour.

Design Crush #5 Magic Lantern Slides

April 3, 2014

Magic Lantern Slides

I have absolutely adored magic lantern shows and all old forms of Victorian street entertainment and Georgian optical illusions for years. From camera obscura’s to zoetropes, magic lantern shows to witches mirrors, punch & Judy, death vanitas and thaumatropes, the whole carnival of spectacle is joyful. I sometimes wonder if I would like to have a room in the apartment that’s crammed with these kinds of objects but alas we just don’t have the space for such spectacle.Read More

Design Trend – 2014 Bohenian Yarn

March 20, 2014

Modern Bohemian interior style home trend

I absolutely love the carnival tones and eclectic patterns of a trend I am choosing to call  bohemian yarn until somebody informs me of what the actual design term will be. We are all accustomed to the design staples of old – global traveller and modern bohemian but there is a real focus on the craft of design in the current trend and an eclecticism that doesn’t merely suggest a hint of the hippy trail installed in the villa of a Notting Hillbilly to me, I am absolutely smitten with it.Read More
