About Design_Soda_Ruthie

I write Design Soda, a design blog with a focus on interiors. My blog aims to be an unpretentious, stimulating, fun and naturally curious delve into inspirational design and Londoncentric culture. I describe my style as boho-eclectic and am open to most design which doesn’t look too serious or composed. As a design geek with a love of vintage and upcycling, I am passionate about my home and love blogging ideas and looks that I find inspirational. Since the time when my teenage bedroom was an Aladdins cave of upcycled furniture, Cecil Beaton photography and Situationist slogans I have been interested in the way the home environment can make you feel and inspire your inner life. As a new mummy, trying to negotiate my passions with my lovely new baby's schedule can be difficult, but in my spare time you will often find me snapping the things that catch my eye in my wonderful home city London. Or, reading, upcycling, spending longer on Pinterest than I should, baking and watching old movies. I have a lifelong passion for French New Wave cinema.

Design Crush #4

Coral & Tusk Emroidery Cushion Five Arrows Fox Headress feather Native American

I am not a massive fan of cutesy crafts, however, I am a big fan of folksy items with charm. Nowhere do I find folksy more charming than in Coral & Tusk‘s simply darling embroidered homewares. Created by textile designer Stephanie Housley, Coral & Tusks designs start life as drawings, by Stephanie, of nature, travels and things that spark her imagination which are then laboriously redrawn stitch by stitch to be machined in her Brooklyn workshop. Her designs are just magical, bringing out the spirit of adventure and a multi-layered representation of the touchstones of nature. I could not love these whimsically charming items any more than I do.Read More

Little Details – Light Bulbs & Fittings

February 3, 2014

incandescent SQUIRRELCAGE filament vintage light bulbs

I tend to call this having a tedious moment, or a middle class dilemma, when I find myself scouring endlessly  online for the cheapest version of some design detail or indulgence I am certain a room refurb won’t be complete without! And without wishing to sound too worthy, I do scowl inwardly at myself for getting caught up in the chase for these objects. But I am also quite a firm believer that it is the small details which can bring most joy and be designed most effectively. I’d love to be able to buy vintage radiators but have scaled my detail hunting down to more economical items like light switches, bulbs & door handles. They are often the bits that can get overlooked in the bigger picture of a room design but the ambiance of light and the feel of a switch are the essential jigsaw pieces that complete a space. Here are some of my favourite finds.Read More
