I’ve gone from feeling we may have been a little early putting up Christmas decs last weekend to wondering how it is already the second Sunday of advent tomorrow(?). I’m sure Christmas will be done and dusted before I have a chance to blink. Today is my last Christmas decoration post (we can all sigh with relief!). And today is a really simple, sustainable craft that I put together whilst watching a Christmas movie one evening this week.

We had an abundance of pine cones that Ted and I have been collecting for ages with no real purpose. And having had a look online for inspiration, outside of wreaths and garlands, everything looked a little naff, there were some cute elves I may make with Ted over the Christmas holidays but I wanted to find something to turn these geometric natural objects into decorations around the house now.

I had some ribbon in the cupboard and have been saving pink ribbon from bouquets I’ve been buying online this year, combined with an abundance of pine from my tree pruning so I thought I’d have a little play and see what happened. It’s almost so simple you don’t need instructions, but I will write them up in case.

Materials

Pine Cones

Fir offcuts

Ribbon

Sewing thread

Needle

Method

  • I didn’t want the mess of glue so I took some thread and attached it within the kernels of the pine cone allowing the thread to come back to the top by threading it through gaps inbetween the scales of the pine cone. This is a little fiddly and it won’t give you the precision of glue but I rather like the slightly undone way my cones hang (especially as it allows you to see the bows better).

  • Then I bound the pieces of pine fir to the thread, securing it again within the scales of the pine cone.

  • Once the pine is securely attached to your pine cone time to make some bows with your ribbons. And then attach the bows atop the pine with thread (for this I used a needle and attached through the back of the bow). Then simple tie off to make a loop to hang the bauble from and voila.
