January reflections and intentions

January 7, 2019

A new year, and often the signal for a fresh start for many of us. A bit of time off over the holidays coinciding with the closing of a calendar year brings all kinds of reflections.

Perhaps you’ve had a great year, perhaps not so much. Whether good, bad, or ugly you might be drawing up lists at this time, things you’re looking forward to, things you’re going to change and things you’re grateful for. I’ve been feeling a little reflective over the last month too, thinking about the things that I’m pleased with and other areas of my life I’d like to change. But I’m also not buying into the self flagellation this time of year can bring, so I’m keeping things a bit more fluid, intentions instead of resolutions and aims instead of goals. I’m wanting to break out of my comfort zone a bit more this year and try new things, so I want to feel the joy of possibility and not the restriction of expectation.

I took a bit of time out from the mad juggle in December to have a think on things, I also got outdoors a bit more which is something I really thrive on and need to make time for throughout the unfolding year. I feel so lucky to be able to juggle time with my child whilst getting paid to work on things that excites me, alongside my one day a week escape to work at the library. When I look back on the year I can see that I have achieved a lot (don’t worry, I’m not going to start listing them all here, I bought myself a journal so will high five myself in private!). I’ve been lucky (a lot) and I’ve had some amazing experiences this year, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say we’ve had our own sadnesses and I’ve found this year difficult. As a result, behind the scenes I’ve had cycles of insomnia, nervous energy and on the other side crippling self doubt and lack of motivation, all of which are difficult when you’re trying to keep the show on the road and in charge of much of the juggle. So in the interests of being intentional I’ve decided to become slightly more flexible about the things I try and this includes what I blog about.

I’m going to try out some of my creative passions (I’d like to learn more photography skills, and something else that I hope I may be able to turn into a small business) and I will no doubt include some of my journey here. I want to focus a little more on colour on the blog since that’s an area I am really passionate about (and get asked about a lot). I put a shout out on Instagram at the end of the year for topics people would like me to cover, I got some great ideas and will be putting those out over the next few months. Quite a few people asked me about styling in the home so I’m thinking of starting a little series on that too.

I also think that as we become an older family (Ted is now 4) that id like to include some of the things we do together on here alongside some more lifestyle based pieces. I never wanted to have a mummy blog (there are many far better equipped people out there that have this covered!) but I think I have lost a little of the content I used to produce simply because we do those things as a family and not a couple now, and I kind of miss that so some outdoors and holiday review type content is also on the agenda.

I feel incredibly privileged to have you along on this journey with me, I still remember a time when I realistically was only talking to a very small audience (hi mum!). So, i’d love to know what you’d like to hear more of from me, blogs are definitely declining with the rise of Instagram and microblogging (I’m far too verbose to ever be able to abandon blogging for a caption) and I’d like to keep content relevant to you. It can be fantastically encouraging and useful to spring board ideas with other people when you work on your own so I’d love to know if there are any topics or areas you’d like me to cover. What are your New Year intentions? I’d also love to hear about them in the comments below.

How lovely and honest. For me personally, I love your house change ups. Also some of the things you have in your home are so individual. I’d love to know your home shopping process!

High five for your achievements last year! To be honest, as long as you love what you write there will be people who will read your stories. So I’m looking forward to what you have planned for 2019!
