About Design_Soda_Ruthie

I write Design Soda, a design blog with a focus on interiors. My blog aims to be an unpretentious, stimulating, fun and naturally curious delve into inspirational design and Londoncentric culture. I describe my style as boho-eclectic and am open to most design which doesn’t look too serious or composed. As a design geek with a love of vintage and upcycling, I am passionate about my home and love blogging ideas and looks that I find inspirational. Since the time when my teenage bedroom was an Aladdins cave of upcycled furniture, Cecil Beaton photography and Situationist slogans I have been interested in the way the home environment can make you feel and inspire your inner life. As a new mummy, trying to negotiate my passions with my lovely new baby's schedule can be difficult, but in my spare time you will often find me snapping the things that catch my eye in my wonderful home city London. Or, reading, upcycling, spending longer on Pinterest than I should, baking and watching old movies. I have a lifelong passion for French New Wave cinema.

Freud teaball cafetiere

Now that the winter chill has really started to bite I have developed habits for hot drinks and croissants. Maybe winter should be a time for bowls of granola and nutritious bulk but it’s also the time one feel most like cosy-ing decadently with something far less worthy. And is there anything more timelessly decadent than well made English tea-sets? This one is sleek and may owe more than a nod to French or modern Italian design, but it’s actually made by a British company that formed to bring the interwar cafe-bar culture of Vienna to London.   Freud have a reputation for doing a mean line in cocktails entirely in keeping with these decadent wares.Read More

Daniel Heath Screenprinting

So, last week saw me do a couple of exciting new things, one was to help with the styling of a project in Fulham and the other was to attend a wallpaper screen-printing demonstration from the very talented Daniel Heath at his studio in Walthamstow. I was invited by new social platform In The Window and have liked Heath’s illustrative designs for a while. The first time I saw them in real life was at Decorex this year and they really are joyful, his Art Deco, taxidermy and circus motifs work exquisitely on both paper and furniture.Read More

How early is too early to start thinking about Christmas?! I have a slightly over-enthusatic inclination as winter draws in to sit perusing recipes and decorations, planing for the time when your home feels most cosy and sociable. I’ve seen magazine shoots on Instagram for months and now the print magazines and adverts have started gearing up I’ve taken the plunge and collected together my favourite Christmas decorations.  If you add to your treasure trove of Christmas pieces each year then you’ve come to the right place, mine isnt out of control quite yet but it’s getting there.  Of all the many things, one of the things I love most about Christmas decorations is the tradition of things in miniature, from whole worlds inside baubles to nativities on shelves, from menageries of hanging animals and houses in miniature as tea light holders, here is my festive home rundown.Read More

Scandi Colour Pop geometric bedroom

So, it’s all been a bit quiet on the blog front whilst we move and now that we have left the old apartment I have been thinking about our old bedroom and the dilemmas new design choices present. I thought I would share some pics I took before we left which I am using as an initial mood board for our next bedroom. I was really happy with our bedroom design, it always felt Read More

In the window 1

Image: In The Window

The design website In The Window have asked me to curate a collection for them, which translates in my head as a great excuse to go window shopping (or window licking as I prefer, see definition here). I have also done a short interview piece with them which you can see here. In The Window, who launched fairly recently, describe themselves as an immersive social experience celebrating the stories around the great design of objects and spaces.
